Setting Your Course
We’ve all done it, and what fun it is – kicking back by the fire or on the porch, plowing through magazines like Mother Earth News, Small Farmer’s Journal, Organic Life; reading classics like the Nearings’ The Good Life; or just dream-scrolling through Insta and Reddit threads. The “how-to-gurus” give the nitty gritty details on what to do when and what equipment we need. It’s all good stuff, and we’ll be pointing you to those resources, but the how-to’s come a little bit later.Â
So what’s different about the Free Range Prof’s approach to digging into “a homesteader’s ecology”? We start with the why that informs the how.Â
If you’re not clear on why you’re choosing a certain path or strategy, you’re more likely to find that you’re not hitting your intended targets in terms of lifestyle or ecological impact. These courses begin by exploring the “why” – based on a diverse cast of practitioners whom you’ll meet in real-time – and then progress into the questions of “how”...and, ultimately, “when” and “where.”
Let’s face it: living a more sustainable life may be the most resilient path, but it’s not always the easiest. The more you invest in considering why you’re pursuing a particular path, the more likely you’ll stick with it over for the long haul.Â
Forget the picture-perfect stereotypes. You do you, with the rest of the planet in mind.
A SPECIAL NOTE TO OUR VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN FRIENDS
While my family and I made a conscious decision to raise livestock and to include meat, milk, and eggs in our diets, we have an abiding respect for those who choose not to consume animal proteins for environmental, ethical, and/or religious reasons. Mutual respect and open discourse on these topics are critical for advancing our individual and collective understandings of the impacts of our food choices. I appreciate and respect your journey and look forward to any conversations we might have in this regard.
