Uncertainty defines our current era, but that doesn’t mean it should define us. Sure, we live in a swirl of ecological, social, and political crises, but the outcomes aren’t predetermined. To the contrary. How we function as organisms, serve as stewards, and contribute as citizens ultimately determines the fate of our families, communities, and planet. 

But the velocity of our responses has to match the velocity of changes surrounding us.  

We can spend countless hours debating the best answers – or we can choose to live the questions. When we live the questions instead of waiting for perfect answers, our impact is immediate – regardless of whether our focus is home, region, or planet. 

After spending three invigorating decades working with students in some of the most innovative colleges in the US, I nonetheless found myself impatient with our educational system’s slow adaptation to the fast-paced changes happening in our environment, economies, and political systems. Increasingly frustrated by the limitations of desks, deans, and disciplines, I decided to break out of the confines of academia and work directly with a more diverse array of citizens and organizations committed to positive change, with requisite speed and scale. Hence, the Free Range Prof.
